How to Read the Bible

A simple rhythm for slowing down, understanding Scripture, and living it out.

A simple rhythm for reading Scripture

M.A.P.S. gives you four movements to use with any passage.

Meditate

Slow down and pay attention to what the passage says.

Apply

Ask how God’s Word should shape your life.

Pray

Turn what you read into a conversation with God.

Share

Tell someone what God is teaching you.

How it Works

Choose a short passage, then move through these four steps.

1. Meditate

Ask: What does this passage say?

Read slowly. Look for repeated words, commands, promises, warnings, emotions, contrasts, and what the passage reveals about God and people.

Try this: Write down one word, phrase, or verse that stands out.

2. Apply

Ask: How should this shape my life?

Move from general ideas to a concrete response.

Try this: Finish the sentence: Because of this passage, today I will...

3. Pray

Ask: How can I respond to God?

Use P.R.A.Y.

  • Praise: God, You are...

  • Repent: God, I confess...

  • Ask: God, help me...

  • Yield: God, I surrender...

Try this: Pray one verse back to God in your own words.

4. Share

Ask: Who could be encouraged by this?

Share one verse, one insight, or one next step with someone else.

Try this: Send this to someone:
“I read this today and thought it might encourage you.”
